10 Common Window Cleaning Mistakes Homeowners Make

Most homeowners clean their windows with good intentions and end up with streaks, spots or even scratches. Near the coast, a few common mistakes make the problem worse. Here are the ones we see most often in San Clemente, and what to do instead.

1. Cleaning in Direct Sun

Warm glass dries cleaning solution before you can wipe it off, leaving streaks. Clean shaded sides of the house, or work early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

2. Using Paper Towels or Newspaper

Paper towels leave lint behind, and newspaper ink can smudge on frames. Use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth or a proper squeegee.

3. Wiping Dry Salt and Sand Off the Glass

Coastal grime is gritty. Wiping it dry drags sand across the surface and can leave fine scratches. Always rinse or soak loose debris first. See why this matters in our guide to salt air and window haze.

4. Using Too Much Soap

Extra soap leaves a sticky film that looks streaky and attracts dust faster. A few drops of dish soap in a bucket of water is plenty.

5. Rinsing With Hard Tap Water and Letting It Dry

Local tap water is hard, so letting it air dry leaves mineral spots. Squeegee immediately, or learn why pros use deionized water instead of tap water.

6. Scraping With the Wrong Tool

Razor blades can scratch some glass, especially tempered glass with manufacturing debris. Steel wool and abrasive pads scratch almost any glass. Stubborn spots are better handled with the right technique or by a professional. See can hard water stains be removed.

7. Ignoring Screens and Tracks

Dirty screens drip grime back onto clean glass the first time it rains or the sprinklers run, and sandy tracks make sliders stiff. Clean screens and tracks and sills along with the glass.

8. Pressure Washing Windows

High pressure can force water past seals, damage screens and break the seal on double-pane windows, which leads to fogging between the panes. Low-pressure rinsing is safer.

9. Climbing Ladders on Uneven Ground

Hillside lots, tile patios and planting beds make ladders dangerous. Upper-story glass is safer to leave to someone with water-fed poles.

10. Waiting Too Long Between Cleanings

Salt and minerals left on glass for months get harder to remove and can start to etch the surface. Near the ocean, regular cleaning is easier and cheaper than restoration. See how often to clean windows near the ocean.
